Curriculum Questions

How can I learn more about Montessori education?

Our Resources page includes links to helpful videos, books, and websites.

Our social media profiles, on Facebook and Instagram (@fairbanksmontessorischool), include regular posts about curriculum materials and lessons.

Do your teachers give letter grades (A,B, C, etc or a GPA)?

No. Parent / Teacher Conferences are twice a year and teachers prepare progress reports for students, but these do not include a traditional grading system.

May I visit / observe my child’s classroom?

Yes. Your child’s Lead Teacher can arrange your observation or visit.

Is going outdoors part of the curriculum?

Yes.

There is an hour of outdoor time each day when temperatures and air quality permit. The half an hour before lunch and final half an hour of the school day are spent outside. Children play outside as long as it is warmer than -20 degrees and as long as the air quality index is 150 or less. Both cold temperatures and air quality are monitored carefully; children may spend less time outside if temperatures are near -20.

Are there supplemental teachers or additional activities beyond the classroom?

Yes.

For the 2025-2026 School Year, Ms. Katie from Music Together will be doing music class for students (approximately once a week, but depending on the school calendar, holidays, etc), and our gym teacher Ms. Melanie will be doing physical education class for students (approximately once a week, but depending on the school calendar, holidays, etc).

Lead Teachers schedule and provide other additional learning experiences (such as a parent who is a dentist coming in to speak to the class) when these will not disrupt the regular classroom day and all parties’ schedules can be accommodated.
